SPIRITUAL THEMES
Our daily themes are designed to inspire and guide players on both their hockey journey and life’s path. They will help build mental toughness, perseverance, determination, and compassion, while fostering a deeper connection to Christ, empowering them to face challenges with strength and grace.
- Scripture: Hebrews 12:1-2
- Theme: Life as a race, and the importance of perseverance and endurance in the Christian faith.
- Application: Just as athletes train for a race, Christians are called to run with endurance the race set before them. This involves fixing our eyes on Jesus and not being distracted by sin or worldly concerns.
- Integration During Camp:
Morning Talk or Devotion: A coach will begin the day with a brief devotion, reading Hebrews 12:1-2, and explain how life—like hockey—is about perseverance and focus. The devotion will include a challenge for players to think about their own “race” and how they can apply the principle of endurance both on and off the ice.
Practice Session: During the drills, the coach will remind players to “keep their eyes on the goal” when they’re tired or frustrated, reinforcing the message of perseverance. This will be framed as an opportunity to practice endurance not just physically, but mentally and spiritually.
Group Reflection Time: After the practice, the camp will have a short group reflection where players share moments where they had to push through challenges or moments of failure. These reflections will be tied back to the idea of staying focused on the goal and relying on faith for strength.
- Scripture: Philippians 2:3-4
- Theme: Competing with a spirit of humility and grace, recognizing that success is not just about winning but about how we compete.
- Application: Encouraging athletes to view competition not as a means of boasting or self-glorification, but as an opportunity to demonstrate humility and Christlike character.
- Integration During Camp:
Morning Talk or Devotion: Before a practice session, the coach will read Philippians 2:3-4 and challenge players to think about how they can put others before themselves that day, on and off the ice.
Practice Session: During a drill session, players will be encouraged to “serve” one another—perhaps by passing the puck more frequently or setting up plays for others to score rather than shooting for themselves. This emphasizes teamwork and humility in a tangible way.
Group Reflection Time: After a scrimmage, the team will gather for a group reflection to discuss how they handled both victory and defeat. They will reflect on whether there were moments of boasting or if the team came together to encourage and build each other up. This time will allow everyone to share their thoughts on how they can better demonstrate humility and grace in future competitions
- Scripture: James 1:2-4; Romans 5:3-5
- Theme: Trials and challenges in sports mirror the trials of life, and through perseverance, athletes grow stronger and more resilient.
- Application: Teaching that setbacks, injuries, or losses in sports can be an opportunity for spiritual growth and reliance on God’s strength.
- Integration During Camp:
Morning Talk or Devotion: Before practice, the coach will read James 1:2-4 and Romans 5:3-5, encouraging athletes to view setbacks—like losses, injuries, or mistakes—as opportunities for growth. The coach will remind players that perseverance builds both physical strength and spiritual maturity, teaching them to rely on God’s strength.
Practice Session: During practice, players will be reminded that tough drills and challenges are chances to develop perseverance. If a player struggles, the coach will encourage them to focus on growth and resilience, rather than discouragement.
Group Reflection Time: After practice or a scrimmage, the group will reflect on how they handled setbacks. Players will share how they felt and discuss how perseverance through challenges leads to growth and greater hope, both on the ice and in their faith.
- Scripture: Luke 9:23; Romans 12:1
- Theme: Sacrifice and commitment are central both to the life of a committed athlete and a committed Christian.
- Application: Exploring how athletes must give up time, comfort, and convenience in order to achieve success, and comparing this to the sacrifices required in the Christian walk.
- Integration During Camp:
Morning Talk or Devotion: Before practice, the coach will read Luke 9:23 and Romans 12:1, challenging athletes to think about the sacrifices they make for their sport—like time away from family, comfort, and convenience—and compare that to the sacrifices required in following Christ. The coach will emphasize that both athletic success and spiritual growth require commitment and a willingness to give up personal desires for a greater purpose.
Practice Session: During practice, athletes will be reminded that the effort they put in—whether it’s extra conditioning, pushing through fatigue, or sacrificing personal comfort—is similar to the sacrifices Christians make in their spiritual lives. The focus will be on the commitment to improvement, both in skill and character, showing that discipline in sports reflects discipline in faith.
Group Reflection Time: After practice, the group will reflect on the sacrifices they’ve made in their training and how those compare to the sacrifices Jesus calls us to make. They will discuss how commitment to their sport mirrors their commitment to their faith, and how those sacrifices lead to greater rewards.
- Scripture: Philippians 4:11-13
- Theme: Maintaining a godly perspective in both success and failure, with gratitude to God for the ability to compete and the lessons learned in defeat.
- Application: Helping athletes cultivate a mindset of thankfulness, recognizing that both success and failure provide opportunities to glorify God.
- Integration During Camp:
Morning Talk or Devotion: Before practice, the coach will read Philippians 4:11-13, teaching athletes the importance of being content in every situation—whether in victory or defeat. The coach will challenge them to develop a spirit of gratitude for the ability to compete, while also seeing losses as opportunities for growth and reliance on God’s strength.
Practice Session: During practice, athletes will be encouraged to focus on effort and improvement, regardless of the outcome. Whether they succeed or face challenges, the goal will be to honor God with their attitude and actions, always giving thanks for the opportunity to compete.
Group Reflection Time: After practice, the group will reflect on the day’s wins and losses, discussing how both can be used to glorify God. Players will share how they can maintain a thankful attitude in the face of success and failure, learning to rely on God’s strength in all circumstances.
